ST. HELENA ISLAND— An accident involving three vehicles claimed five lives on St. Helena Island on May 29.
The accident occurred on the Sea Island Parkway near the intersection of Polowana Road around 10:30 p.m.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2009 BMW sedan with four occupants was traveling south when the driver attempted to pass a 2004 Toyota Tundra, which was also traveling south. In doing so, the BMW collided head-on with a northbound 2009 Honda Accord.
After the collision, the BMW ran off the road, overturned and caught fire.

"The BMW turned on its side and was fully involved," Scott Harris, spokesman for the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District, told The Post and Courier. "It had caught fire. The gas tank ruptured."

The Tundra also ran off the road attempting to avoid the collision and struck the BMW.
All four occupants of the BMW died at the scene of the accident, as did the Honda driver. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

Shooting claims the life of Beaufort County man

The Beaufort County Coroner's Office has not yet released the names of accident victims.
The accident remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
