Meet Auri, an 8th grade ASD Fine Arts student. Auri's art was selected by a panel of judges to be gifted to the winners of the 2023-24 Denali Award winners, which is the highest award offered by the District to employees.Auri chose to write a poem as her bio:“As the warm air breezes through my hair The sun softly kisses my faceIn this place where I escapeIs where my dreams and thoughts Sway back and forth like flowersI find FREEDOM”Thank you for the gift of art, Auri! Keep shining bright! #ASDShineBright

Check out this music video done by students from East Anchorage High School who spent the past few months creating this original song and music video during an after school program funded by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development After School Programs grant. The students decided to focus on a theme of mental health and the struggles they face in their day to day lives. This all part of a project by the non profit See Stories whose mission is to build inclusive communities with film and story.See Stories says they couldn't be more proud of the students who transformed their struggles into beauty and art, and if you listen to their lyrics you will hear them describe that process. Thank you to Tayy Tarantino for being the instructor and to Vasco Vea for producing the video. https://lnkd.in/gWmKTqt8

Good afternoon, ASD community and happy last day of school! Thank you for making the 2023-24 school year such a success. This year has been transformative for ASD.We’ve implemented Professional Learning Community (PLS) Mondays across the District, giving teachers dedicated time to collaborate, participate in professional development, and sharpen their skills for the best classroom experience. We also launched our Reading For Life initiative and are already seeing big progress–particularly with our youngest learners. We can accredit this growth to our amazing teachers, who have the capacity to set students up for success. For example, our teachers are trained in the science of reading. They are highly engaged with students, and students have a clear understanding of what they need to learn. Additionally, teachers have high and consistent expectations. These academic expectations go hand-in-hand with the mental health initiative we piloted this year: Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. It’s an evidence-based framework for teaching and supporting positive behavior for all students. Through PBIS, schools establish clear expectations for behaviors across all school settings. The combination of a safe and consistent learning environment and challenging yet clear academic expectations are setting the stage for student success. Every day your student is in school matters. Thank you to the families and communities who support your students in getting to school every day–attendance is key. Looking ahead, we have some significant changes on the horizon when you return in the fall, including changes to school start times and transitioning sixth graders to middle school. Additionally, the Academies of Anchorage initiative holds tremendous promise for addressing workforce challenges and increasing graduation rates. Our focus remains steadfast on improving outcomes for our students.I want to take a moment to acknowledge the staff transitions taking place within our district. To those retiring or moving on to new roles, thank you for your dedication and years of service. We are also fortunate to welcome a new cohort of leaders who will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success of our district. Your commitment to our students is unmatched, and i'm grateful for each and every one of you.I’d like to close by saying while summer break is here, many resources for families will continue throughout the summer. Please visit our website for information on summer meal programs, summer learning opportunities, and a family resource directory.I wish you a restful summer break.Jharrett Bryantt, Ed.D.Superintendent
