Women in Design for Gender Equity

Today, we mark the 103rd anniversary of Women's Equality Day, a day that commemorates the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. While we've come a long way, the journey toward true equality is still ongoing. It's a journey that each of us has the power and responsibility to shape. Women's equity is a human fight, not just a female fight. As we reflect on over a century of tireless activism, let's also acknowledge our own role in this narrative. Each of us, in our unique capacities, is a change agent, making waves in the realm of design and beyond. Our collective strength has the potential to sculpt the world in the image of true equity and inclusivity. As we've learned from the generations of women before us, every voice counts, every action matters. If you're a woman in design, you're invited to harness that power and join us in designing a brighter, more equal future for all.https://lnkd.in/ggZCCgDT

In Canada 60% of Corporate Boards have 100% male only board members, let that sink in for a minute. Bearing in mind that the research shows when you have more females and diversity on boards you do better and make more on the bottom line. So not only is this the right thing to do it is the smart thing to do. Please do not use the excuse you can’t find qualified female and diverse board members, we are here willing and able to serve. The bigger question is why you are not inviting us to your board tables?

Money is #power, and the fact that #women are starting to wield more of it has the capacity to change the world -- for good. I'm so thrilled to see TD Wealth investing in this research and illuminating these trends, and I was honoured to be among those interviewed for the report. Bravo to you, Jo-Anne Ryan, FEA, MFA-P and Jess Merber, FEA and the work of the #PrivateGivingFoundation.

If you haven't read TD's latest update on their Women and Philanthropy research - put it on your list. This report has come so far since it's first release in 2014. Sadly - some of the statistics have not. Though this is a philanthropic story, I was gobsmacked by one of the corporate stats on page 26 of the report: that 60% of the corporate boards in Canada are still 100% men, and a further 28% have one [token] woman.I quoted this stat a number of times to colleagues and friends (male and female) and was not believed. If you need proof - here is the specific data and source (thanks to TD's lead research Keith Sjogren):“In2020, women occupied just over one-fifth (20.5%) of the17,996seats on boards of directors, edging up0.3percentage points over the proportion of women recorded in2019. The majority of boards of directors did not have any women directors:59.7% of the5,810boards of directors included in the dataset were only composed of men. Over one-quarter (28.0%) of boards of directors had one woman director, while boards of directors with two or more women directors represented12.3% of the dataset. (Representation of women on boards of directors and in officer positions 2020, Statistics Canada. May 2023)”As we continue to chase the 30% threshold - it didn't occur to me that we needed to be asking the "how many all male boards still exist?"...is anyone else stunned? And of the 28% of boards with one woman - do we even want to take a guess of what percent of those women are white? We still have a long way to go folks.
